Sarracenia Hybrid – Flava × Leucophylla Type
An elegant North American pitcher plant with tall, slender pitchers, dramatic red veining and beautifully patterned white markings across the hood.
This attractive Sarracenia displays characteristics associated with Sarracenia flava × Sarracenia leucophylla (Sarracenia × moorei). Its upright pitchers develop from fresh green and yellow-green at the base into increasingly prominent red venation towards the upper pitcher.
The hood is the real highlight, developing a rich red to burgundy colour overlaid with contrasting cream-white translucent windows and intricate veining. As the pitchers mature and receive plenty of strong light, the colouration can become increasingly pronounced.
Like other Sarracenia, the pitchers act as highly specialised insect traps. Nectar around the pitcher opening attracts insects, which can lose their footing on the slippery surface and fall inside, where the plant is able to obtain nutrients from its prey.
Growing Information
Light: Full sun or very bright direct light. Strong sunlight encourages compact growth and the best pitcher colouration.
Water: Keep permanently moist during active growth. Stand the pot in approximately 1–3cm of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Avoid ordinary tap water in hard-water areas.
Compost: Grow in nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost. Never use conventional multipurpose compost or fertiliser.
Dormancy: Sarracenia are temperate carnivorous plants and naturally enter winter dormancy. Pitchers may brown and die back during winter before fresh growth emerges in spring.
Hardiness: Generally suitable for an unheated greenhouse, conservatory or sunny outdoor position in the UK. Protect pots from prolonged severe freezing.
