Sarracenia Hybrid – Leucophylla Type

A spectacular North American pitcher plant combining tall, elegant pitchers with richly coloured burgundy hoods and intricate white patterning.

This particularly attractive Sarracenia shows strong characteristics of Sarracenia leucophylla, the White-Topped Pitcher Plant. Its tall upright pitchers emerge predominantly fresh green before developing increasingly dramatic red and burgundy colouration towards the upper portion of the trap.

The upper pitchers are covered with an intricate network of red veining and contrasting translucent white windows, culminating in broad, beautifully patterned hoods. On mature pitchers the hood can develop an exceptionally deep wine-red to burgundy colour, scattered with bright contrasting white areoles.

The combination of fresh green lower pitchers and intensely coloured upper growth makes this an especially striking plant when grown as a mature clump.

Like other Sarracenia, its beautiful pitchers are highly specialised insect traps. Nectar around the pitcher opening attracts insects towards the trap, where the slippery surfaces can cause them to fall into the pitcher. The plant then obtains valuable nutrients from its captured prey.

Growing Information

Light: Full sun. Strong direct sunlight is important for vigorous growth and encourages the richest red and burgundy colouration.

Water: Keep permanently moist during the growing season. Stand in approximately 1–3cm of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Avoid hard tap water.

Compost: Grow in nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost. Do not use standard multipurpose compost, conventional plant food or fertiliser.

Dormancy: Sarracenia are temperate carnivorous plants and require a natural winter dormancy. Older pitchers may brown and die back before vigorous new growth emerges in spring.

Hardiness: Suitable for an unheated greenhouse or sunny outdoor position in much of the UK. Container-grown plants should be protected from prolonged severe freezing.

Plant Supplied

You will receive an established plant of the smaller type shown. As these are living plants, individual pitcher number, height, shape and colouration will naturally vary according to season and stage of growth. Larger plants are available, please message for any information

With good light and maturity, the pitchers can become increasingly impressive, and established plants can eventually develop into substantial clumps containing numerous traps.

Please note: This plant is offered as a Sarracenia leucophylla-type hybrid based upon its visible characteristics. Without original provenance, no specific named cultivar or exact parentage is being claimed.
