A wonderfully robust North American pitcher plant, producing compact clusters of broad pitchers that develop spectacular shades of red, crimson and deep burgundy.

Sarracenia purpurea, commonly known as the Purple Pitcher Plant, is one of the most distinctive members of the Sarracenia genus. Rather than producing the tall, upright pitchers seen in many other species, S. purpurea forms a lower, spreading rosette of broad, substantial traps.

The pitchers develop increasingly rich colouration when exposed to strong sunlight, ranging from green and bronze through warm red to deep crimson and burgundy. This specimen shows particularly impressive red colouration across both the pitchers and hoods.

Each pitcher is crowned by a large, beautifully textured hood. Fine downward-pointing hairs cover the inner surface, helping direct insects towards the pitcher below.

Unlike many other Sarracenia, the open pitchers of S. purpurea naturally collect rainwater. Insects attracted to the pitcher can fall into this water-filled trap, where a fascinating miniature ecosystem helps break down prey and release nutrients that can be absorbed by the plant.

Growing Information

Light: Full sun. Strong direct sunlight encourages compact growth and develops the richest red and burgundy colouration.

Water: Keep permanently wet during the growing season. Stand the pot in approximately 1–3cm of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Avoid hard tap water.

Compost: Grow in nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost. Never use ordinary multipurpose compost or conventional fertiliser.

Dormancy: Sarracenia purpurea is a temperate carnivorous plant and requires a natural winter dormancy. Growth slows significantly during the colder months before resuming in spring.

Hardiness: Sarracenia purpurea is one of the hardier pitcher plants and is well suited to outdoor bog gardens and unheated greenhouse cultivation in the UK. Container-grown plants should still be protected from prolonged extreme freezing.

You will receive a smaller established Sarracenia purpurea of the type shown, with at least 3 pitchers. As these are living plants, individual size, pitcher number and colouration will naturally vary depending upon the season and stage of growth. Larger ones are available on request.

Established plants gradually develop into increasingly substantial clumps, producing numerous pitchers and making an excellent feature in a carnivorous plant collection or outdoor bog garden.

Strong sunlight is particularly important for achieving the intense red and burgundy colouration shown in mature pitchers.
