Sarracenia Hybrid – Leucophylla × Purpurea Type

A beautifully coloured North American pitcher plant hybrid producing upright green pitchers with intricate pale markings, contrasting red veining and broad, softly ruffled hoods.

This attractive Sarracenia shows characteristics strongly suggestive of both Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia purpurea influence.

Young pitchers emerge predominantly fresh green to yellow-green, decorated with delicate red veins and pale translucent markings. As the pitchers mature and receive strong sunlight, they can develop increasingly rich shades of pink, bronze, orange and red.

The upper pitchers and hoods are particularly attractive. Pale translucent areas contrast against the red veining, while the broad, gently undulating hoods give the plant a distinctive appearance.

Its combination of colour and pitcher shape is reminiscent of some well-known leucophylla × purpurea-derived hybrids, including Sarracenia 'Juthatip Soper'. However, this plant has no original label or documented provenance and is therefore not being offered as that named cultivar.

Like other Sarracenia, the pitchers are specialised insect traps. Nectar attracts insects towards the pitcher opening, where slippery surfaces and downward-pointing hairs make escape increasingly difficult.

Growing Information

Light: Full sun. Strong direct sunlight encourages vigorous growth and develops the richest red, pink and bronze colouration.

Water: Keep permanently moist during active growth. Stand the pot in approximately 1–3cm of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Avoid hard tap water.

Compost: Grow in nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost. Never use standard multipurpose compost or conventional fertiliser.

Dormancy: This is a temperate carnivorous plant and requires a winter dormancy. Growth slows during the colder months before fresh pitchers emerge in spring.

Hardiness: Suitable for an unheated greenhouse and potentially an outdoor carnivorous bog garden in much of the UK. Protect container-grown plants from prolonged severe freezing.

Colouration can change considerably through the growing season. New pitchers may initially be predominantly green before developing stronger pink, red and bronze tones with maturity and exposure to sunlight.

Established plants can form impressive multi-growth-point clumps containing numerous pitchers.

Identification Note

This plant is being offered as an unidentified Sarracenia hybrid showing strong S. leucophylla × S. purpurea-type characteristics.

It bears a notable resemblance to Sarracenia 'Juthatip Soper', but because there is no original label or documented provenance, no claim is being made that this plant is the named cultivar 'Juthatip Soper'.
